NSF REU: Evolutionary Behavioral Genetics

The goal of this program is to provide students with first-hand experience in cutting-edge research in the evolutionary genetics of animal behavior. Students will participate by conducting experiments on fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster), forming hypotheses about the evolution of behavior, reading papers from the scientific literature, and interacting with graduate students and faculty. If you are interested in animal behavior, genetics, evolution, or just experiencing biology research, this program is for you!

This program is only open to community college students.

The position starts in mid-May 16 and ends in early August (exact dates TBA). This position is half-time, and you are expected to be on Rice University’s campus from either 9am to 1pm, or 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday each week. Any expected absences should be discussed prior to acceptance of the position. You will be given a stipend of $3,300 total for the 12-week duration, plus a one-time travel subsidy (up to $270) for local transportation costs if appropriate documentation is provided. Space is limited, therefore, completing the application process does not guarantee placement in the program.

  • Receive direction and mentorship from a post-graduate lab member
  • Be treated respectfully and fairly as a valued member of our lab. Note that we have a strict policy against discrimination of any kind.
  • Conduct experiments to the very best of your ability while conforming to the highest standards of scientific ethics.
  • Participate actively and collaboratively in the lab. You will comply with all relevant policies, rules, and regulations of Rice University.
  • Present a poster at Rice University’s IBB poster session at the end of the summer, or will arrange a suitable replacement presentation.
  • Complete short tests of knowledge before and after the internship to track your progress.
