Topic: The African Diaspora, Anti-Black Racism, and Sport in Canada

Description: Although the diversity among participants in Canadian sports has steadily increased, our organizations still struggle to develop a deep understanding of (anti-)racism issues, awareness of ongoing structural barriers, and actions to ensure representation and justice. Dr. Joseph will share her perspectives on the African diaspora in sport, and her partnership with The Black Canadian Coaches Association (BCCA), which aims to raise awareness, develop policy, and build educational tools to eliminate systemic anti-Black racism within Canadian college and university sport. Dr. Joseph’s research aims to improve the academic progress, athletic productivity, mental health, and advancement opportunities of racialized sport administrators, coaches, and student-athletes.

Speaker: Professor Janelle Joseph, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education.
