Credit Courses for High School Students

11–12th graders  |  Available all semesters

This program for rising 11th and 12th graders allows high school students to earn college credit and study among Rochester undergraduates. Courses are offered during the University’s fall, spring, and summer semesters, and credits are transferable to most colleges and universities.

Please note:

  • On-campus housing is not available.
  • First-time students are only permitted to take one course.
  • High school students are required to take courses with no prerequisites.

Monroe County Community Math Program

11–12th graders  |  Available all semesters

This incentive offered by the University’s Department of Mathematics is available to students residing in Monroe County, New York who have exhausted all of their high school math classes. Students applying for credit bearing courses who are interested in taking a math course are eligible for a 50 percent tuition discount. Please note the Monroe County Math Program cannot be combined with other tuition benefits or financial aid.

Any math course offered during the chosen semester is eligible for a maximum of 50 percent tuition discount. A student’s application will be reviewed by the Department of Mathematics and the Office of Pre-College Programs to ensure the student’s preparedness and success in the course. It is possible that a different math course will be recommended for a student to take based on the appropriate prerequisites or the student’s academic level.

Math 165: Linear Algebra with Differential Equations is the recommended course that students should apply for if interested in this program. The course is offered during the spring, summer, and fall semesters. Math 165 covers:

  • Matrix algebra and inverses
  • Gaussian elimination
  • Determinants
  • Vector spaces and eigenvalue problems
  • First order differential equations
  • Linear second order differential equations with constant coefficients, undetermined coefficients, and linear systems of differential equations

This course has applications to physical, engineering, and life sciences in the course.

*Please note students enrolling in Math 165 need a test score of 4 or 5 in AP Calculus BC from their high school or successful completion of Math 162.

Additional Information

Returning Students Taking Credit-Courses

Student enrolled in credit-courses from the previous semester are not required to re-apply. Do not open or complete a new application. Please send an email to precollege@rochester.edu with your UR Student ID, course you want to take, and we will get you enrolled for the new semester. No application fee is required.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition for non-matriculated students is calculated per credit hour based on the semester the student is applying for. Learn more about tuition and fees.

Employees: If you are a University of Rochester employee, your children may be eligible for tuition benefits. *Please note that tuition benefits will not cover full tuition for non-matriculated students. The most that will be covered by Employee Tuition Benefits is 50 percent, but is sometimes less. Please contact the Office of Total Rewards to learn about Employee Tuition Benefits and how to apply for them.

Application Process

Interested students must submit the Pre-College Programs online application by the appropriate deadline.  Applicants should allow for two to three weeks from the time all application materials are received by our office to receive a decision.

Admitted students will submit payment in the form of a credit card, check, or tuition waiver. Complete payment is due prior to the start date of the class.

Orientation (Required for summer sessions only)

Newly admitted students must attend an orientation offered by the Office of Pre-College Programs. During orientation, students will be given a tour of campus, including their classroom location, and be taken to the ID office, parking office, and bookstore. Please note the following information:

Obtaining an ID Card

Your ID card will allow you to check books out of the library, attend campus events, etc.

Parking Pass

All parking on campus requires a parking pass. Visit the parking website for more information.

Books

Most classes require books. These can be purchased in person at the bookstore or online.

Dropping/Adding Courses

The deadline for dropping a course or adding a new course varies for each session. For more information, see the College’s adding courses and dropping courses policies.

Tuition Refund Schedule

If you are dropping or withdrawing from a course, you may only be refunded a portion of the tuition paid. See the tuition refund page for more information.

Requesting a Transcript

Students will need to request their own transcripts if they require a copy (for personal use or for high school records). Transcripts can be requested through a student’s Blackboard account or directly through the Office of the Registrar.
