  • International Applicants

International students have the opportunity to study in the United States and experience college life on an American campus. While participation in the Pre-College Program does not guarantee admission to a college or university, the successful completion of a pre-college program demonstrates the student's potential to study in English at the university level.

All applicants whose native language is not English (U.S. citizens and Non-U.S. citizens) are required to submit official or unofficial results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

The language proficiency test scores are required for both the Summer Scholars Three-Week Credit Program and the UM Academies Two-Week Non-Credit Program.

For non-native English speakers submitting the TOEFL or IELTS, competitive applicants generally score above the following:

    • 550 on the paper-based TOEFL
    • 80 on the online TOEFL
    • 6.5 on the IELTS

For information, visit the University's English Proficiency Requirements page. To request a waiver, complete the Pre-College Request to Waive TOEFL or IELTS Form in the Pre-College Status Portal.
