Volunteer FAQs

Interested in volunteering with us? Here are some of the most commonly asked questions about volunteering at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank.

Is there an age requirement to volunteer at the Food Bank?

Volunteers are required to be 14 or older in order to participate in the bulk of available opportunities at the Food Bank. Volunteers aged six and older are invited to participate in lighter-duty projects in our Repack area on the fourth Monday of each month from 6-8 pm. For each shift, we book a maximum of 30 volunteers. Don’t be surprised if they book up quickly! Because of the popularity of the shifts, we only book volunteers for our Family Nights three months in advance. To check availability and sign up, please email our team: at volunteer@clevelandfoodbank.org.

Do I need to register to be a volunteer at the Food Bank?

All volunteers, including chaperones, are required to register online before their first visit to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. Do I need to schedule a time to volunteer at the Food Bank?

What do I need to bring with me when I volunteer at the Food Bank?

Volunteers do not need to bring any paperwork to the Food Bank unless they require their own community service documentation for school or court. The Food Bank has generic GCFB Service Forms Available. Please let us know at the beginning of your shift if you require verification of any kind.

Is there a dress code for volunteers?

Volunteers should plan to dress appropriately and comfortably for their specific project area. We ask that all volunteers be mindful to dress appropriately, as we have a wide variety of groups and ages that visit and volunteer with our organization. If you have any questions or would like recommendations, please contact our Volunteer Experience Team. Please use the following as a guide:

  • Volunteers are required to wear closed-toe and closed-heel footwear while participating in all of our project areas. Improper footwear includes Crocs, sandals, flip-flops, clogs, etc.
  • Please do not wear or bring anything that displays language or pictures that may be considered offensive or inappropriate.

Volunteers who arrive without appropriate attire will be asked to change before beginning their shift.

Can I complete Community Service hours for school or court by volunteering at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank?

The Greater Cleveland Food Bank is a great place to complete community service hours for school or court.

When completing hours for community service, it is the volunteer's responsibility to register as a volunteer before their first visit to the Food Bank and to sign in and out and the beginning and end of each shift. If volunteers do not sign in, we will have no record of their volunteer hours and will not be able to confirm the time they have logged.

At the volunteer's request, the Volunteer Services team will be more than happy to sign off on paper work or provide a service letter.
