  • A new study coauthored by researchers at the University of California, Davis provides insights into how plants “smell.” To communicate with themselves, plants emit and perceive volatile organic compounds (VOCs), tiny molecules that are often associated with distinct smells. “We know that flowering plants produce some VOCs as a defense or to attract pollinators,” said coauthor Nitzan Shabek, an associate professor in the Department of Plant Biology. “But it's interesting that these molecules are also related to internal plant communication.” By using a combination of genetics, biochemistry and structural biology, the researchers showed that petunia plants perceive molecular signals emitted by budding flowers via KAI2 receptors. Without these receptors, the plants were unable to perceive signals sent out by their flower buds, and as a result their flowers had stunted development and produced fewer seeds. The work was published March 21 in Science. #Research #PlantScience #Biochemistry

  • PREP@UC Davis is a groundbreaking program fostering diversity in biomedical sciences, preparing scholars for success in Ph.D. programs. Since 2017, it's been a cornerstone of UC Davis' commitment to nurturing a vibrant learning community. Supported by the National Institutes of Health, PREP@UCD offers scholars access to cutting-edge research tools and experiences through collaborations with faculty, postdocs, and graduate students. "PREP empowers aspiring scientists with tools and mentorship," says Director Joanna Chiu, Professor of Entomology and Nematology. "It catalyzes positive transformations in individuals and the scientific landscape." Scholars spend 75% of their time in mentor labs, diving deep into research, and 25% on professional development, including science communication training. Tailored seminars and workshops refine skills vital for a scientific career, shaping strong scientific identities in scholars. Congratulations to this year's PREP@UC Davis scholars! 🎓 Let's celebrate their dedication to advancing biomedical sciences and fostering diversity in STEM! 🌟 #UCDavis #STEMeducation #ResearchDiversity 🚀

  • Today is 🌍 #EarthDay! University of California, Davis In celebration, we visited the UC Davis Botanical Conservatory where our students shared some of the collection’s more unusual plants. (Including a plant that looks like a rock!) Did you know that collections like the one right here at UC Davis help safeguard species and their genetic diversity? It’s just one of the ways the conservatory serves our campus and our world. #Biodiversity #Conservation 🌱 👉Check out the UC Davis Conservatory here: https://bit.ly/3ZcKRih Featuring: Makayla Davis: Plant Biology Nate Rosselli: Plant Sciences Video Description: UC Davis students Makayla Davis and Nate Rosselli, brings us through the UC Davis Botanical Conservatory, introducing Darlingtonia, Pseudolithos, and Osa Pulchra plants.

  • Have you ever wanted to be in a lush rainforest? If so, take a look at the college’s Botanical Conservatory, which is on the UC Davis campus and home to more than 4,000 species of plants. (Including a whole section of carnivorous plants.) Most famously, “Ted,” the titan arum plant, smells like rotting flesh and blooms only once every ten years or so. There’s also a cocoa plant and coffee tree. 🌳 Take a look here: bit.ly/3zYF5VV Image Description: A 3D Panoramic image of the Botanical Conservatory.
