#ICYMI, the largest amputee soccer event in Northern California took place last month. “Say YES to Soccer” united a diverse community to celebrate Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month in style. Beyond the soccer matches, the event collected over 14 donated prosthetic parts, many now en route to an organization in Ghana. The event was hosted by the Limb Care Foundation, a brainchild of Laduan Smedley, Supervisor of Orthotics and Prosthetics/Inpatient OSS at UC Davis Health and co-founder of the foundation. The event was sponsored by Prosthesis Embodiment Through Intuitive Technology (PETIT) at UC Davis and the UC Davis Bionic Engineering and Assistive Robotics Laboratory (BEAR). Today is #NationalSpaceDay 🚀 and we are featuring a totally out-of-this-world research center at the University of California, Davis. Housed under the UC Davis Office of Research, the Center for Spaceflight Research comprises four laboratories that take a transdisciplinary approach to investigate all aspects of human spaceflight from multiple viewpoints, from engineering to computer science to chemistry. At this center, a wide spectrum of spaceflight research projects is underway: Robotic limbs are being taught to find and pick up a dropped wire, hard disc drives are being converted into reaction wheels for satellites the size of a tissue box and a prototype of an astronaut-powered laundry machine is being developed and tested. "Engineering, to me, represents a discipline where creativity meets practicality, offering a path to directly impact society through innovation." These words are from Gautham Pandian, a University of California, Davis computer science and engineering junior who has been working on long-term engineering project Tallyrus, a web application that uses artificial intelligence to analyze and grade student papers. He co-founded the app and startup about a year ago with fellow UC Davis student Ashwin Chembu. For Pandian, a major draw to UC Davis and the College of Engineering was the Student Startup Center, which provides resources for students developing products and businesses. He currently participates in PLASMA, a 12-week accelerator program at the Student Startup Center that offers students educational and networking opportunities with mentors, industry leaders and other entrepreneurs. PLASMA Demo Day is tomorrow, May 2, when entrepreneurs will pitch their companies.
