Undergraduate Research and Creative Collaborations

• Provost Undergraduate Research Fund (academic year and senior thesis funding): Up to $250 to support Brandeis undergraduate research or creative scholarship in all disciplines, including all areas of the creative arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and interdisciplinary projects. Each student must have a Brandeis faculty mentor who will oversee their research project.

• Brenda Meehan Social Justice-In-Action Grant:The Brenda Meehan Social Justice-in-Action Grants will provide up to $1,000 to support events planned for the 2023-2024 academic year. Applications will be accepted until the application deadline and recipients will be notified soon after.

• Greenberg Scholar Grant Program: Grants ranging from $200 to $1,500 to be used for research-related expenses, such as essential hardware or software, digital recorders, travel or other justifiable expenses that facilitate the gathering or analysis of evidence to support a high-quality honors thesis.

• Fisher Explorer Grants: Up to $750 (based on expenses) for Brandeis seniors pursuing projects in one or more of the three departments in the Creative Arts: Fine Arts, Music, and Theater Arts. Students majoring in Fine Arts, Music, or Theater Arts will have funding priority, but Seniors with other majors who are conducting creative arts projects are eligible to apply.

• Maurice J. and Fay B. Karpf and Ari Hahn Peace Awards: Up to $3,000 awarded to Brandeis undergraduate and graduate students who wish to work on peace, conflict resolution, and coexistence projects.

• Eli J. & Phyllis N. Segal Citizen Leadership Program: Program for Brandeis University or Heller School rising junior and seniors from any academic discipline to support travel, food, lodging, and bills related to summer work in citizen leadership.

• Rena J. Olshansky Grant to Support Research on Jewish Family Life: Grant to support an undergraduate or graduate project deemed best able to contribute new knowledge or understanding of any aspect of Jewish family life past or present. Research is encouraged in fields as diverse as sociology, history, anthropology, religion, education, American studies, Israel or middle eastern studies, biblical studies, literature or the arts.

• Rich/Collins Community Leadership and Impact Fellowship: Mini-grants of $500-$4,000 awarded to Brandeis undergraduate students to design and implement their own local impact project in partnership with their local community.

• LACLS Grant for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Migration: Grants to support projects and initiatives that demonstrate a substantial engagement with questions of race, ethnicity, and/or immigration across Latin America, Caribbean, U.S. Latinx communities, and the Latin American diaspora around the world. Projects focused on race, ethnicity, and/or migration of a comparative and transcultural nature, connecting Latin America and the Caribbean to other regions of the world, are also welcome.

• Leonard Bernstein Festival of the Creative Arts: The Leonard Bernstein Festival of the Creative Arts celebrates the abundant creativity of Brandeis students, faculty and staff, joined by distinguished guest artists. Grants from Arts Engagement are available to support original creative work by Brandeis students, staff, faculty, and alumni. Proposals for works of music, theater, performance, and visual art are all welcome. We especially encourage community-engaged proposals. Grants range from $50 to $500 and are to be used for materials and services needed for the creation of new work.

• SPARK: Pilot funding for innovative projects that involve the environment, education, computer science, health care, economic solutions or social needs, designed by collaborations among Brandeis students, faculty, postdoctoral fellows or staff.

• Richard Saber Undergraduate Research Grant: Grant awarded every fall to a Brandeis undergraduate to support a research project in the field of Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies.

Ongoing Funding Opportunities for Grants and Fellowships

• Anne Carter Economics Honors Research Fund: Fund to assist economics majors in their research for the Economics Senior Honors Thesis Program, to help offset data, travel, and other eligible expenses.

• Arts Engagement BIPOC Creator Grants: Grants for undergraduate students in any course of study whose creative work amplifies the voices of BIPOC people. Funds can be used to procure resources such as equipment, materials, studio time, lessons, workshops and so forth for creative arts disciplines such as (but not limited to) music, photography, curating, filmmaking, design, poetry, spoken word, etc.
• Micro-Grants for Social Justice (Begins July 22 of each year): Grants to promote meaningful conversations, engagement, and critical explorations of race, Black-Jewish relations, Jews of color, and other relevant topics. May be used to support academic research, creative projects, and educational initiatives (i.e., reading groups).
• Student-Scholar Partnership Program: On-campus paid hourly research assistantships allowing any undergraduate student who shares interest in a project a current Women’s Studies Research Center (WSRC) scholar is conducting can work side-by-side the scholar as a research partner; these opportunities now posted to Workday (search for “womens studies research ctrl” under student job opportunities.
• WGS Micro Grants for Social Justice: Up to $200 microgrants to support student-led community projects and individual student initiatives for social change and racial justice.

• The Davis Projects for Peace: The Davis Projects for Peace initiative encourages students to design grassroots projects for peace anywhere in the world that they will then implement during the summer.

• Dr. Jack and Diana Cohen Interdisciplinary Studies Award: provides a research stipend of $500 to a Brandeis undergraduate to support an independent interdisciplinary research project. To be eligible, student must have a confirmed Brandeis Faculty mentor and project plan. Applicants must be current Brandeis undergraduate enrolled full time at Brandeis in the spring semester that they apply.

• Mortimer Hays-Brandeis Traveling Fellowship: Fellowship supports graduating seniors in the visual and fine arts, including art history, conservation, studio art and photography, for travel and living expenses outside the continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii. Graduating seniors must receive their undergraduate degree before the start of the fellowship year on July 1.

  • If your application is advanced to the selection committee, the final application will be due March 6, 2023.

• Brenda Meehan Social Justice-in-Action Grants: Up to $1,500 grant for research/project supplies to create an event to bring together academic and activist perspectives on public policy issues, such as healthcare, immigration, harassment, criminal justice reform, and climate change.

• Division of Science Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURFs): Fellowships to support undergraduate research in Brandeis science laboratories during the summer months, including projects in any Division of Science department allocated through a single application.

• Jane's Travel and Research Grant: Grants of up to $3,500 to undergraduate Brandeis students to conduct research in Latin America, the Caribbean and the Latin American Diaspora in the United States.

• Crown Center Travel & Study Grant: Up to $5,000 grant for current Brandeis first years, sophomores, juniors, as well as current Brandeis graduate students. Seniors and graduate students in their last year may apply for grants to be used prior to graduation. Any field of study may be considered, but the research must be related to the Middle East.

• Adventures in American Music(s) Research Fellowship: up to $5,000 per year to sponsor the research activities of a Brandeis undergraduate student majoring or minoring in music, in the research area of “Music(s) of America,” broadly construed. Undergraduate students majoring and minoring in music and in their junior year are  eligible to apply.

• Ilene Gordon Wittels Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship in Social Psychology: Stipend to enhance research opportunities for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors working in Psychology Labs with a focus on social or developmental topics.

• Rapaporte Foundation Summer Internship Grants: Grants of $4,000 to support an otherwise unpaid summer internship in an organization or project that is directly connected to the academic goals of the Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program, for students who will be returning to Brandeis the following year and who are under financial necessity to earn summer income.

• Eugene C. Black Internship Prize: Stipend for declared history majors and minors who are conducting a summer history-related internship.

• World of Work Fellowships: Fellowships to financially support rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have secured unpaid internships over the summer.

• The Tauber Institute Undergraduate Research Awards: Grants up to $2,000 to rising seniors planning to conduct thesis research in any discipline related to Jewish Studies, to support travel expenses (such as visits to archives), purchase of materials (such as microfilm), and costs of data collection and processing.

Schiff Undergraduate Fellowships: Funding to sophomores, juniors or seniors together with a faculty mentor to perform an innovative research or pedagogical project primarily during the upcoming academic year, although projects can start in the summer. First year students may apply, but must have strong support from their proposed mentor.
