Celebrating 150 Years
Since it opened its doors in 1875, Smith has been educating women to be forces of change. Throughout 2025, we’ll reflect on and celebrate all the ways Smith has pushed the world forward, including the history of Smith and Northampton.

Art All Around Us

Smith Arts Day is April 19

Introduced in 2024, Smith Arts Day is a daylong celebration of our artistic and creative community that brings the arts together—across disciplines and across campus. The Smith Office for the Arts (SOFA) invites community members to attend performances, exhibitions, workshops, art-making activities, and more.

The festivities begin on Friday, April 18, with a student art sale in the Julia McWilliams Child ’34 Campus Center.

A Culture of Curiosity

Abby Sweeney ’25

Economics and American Studies major; Global Finance concentrator

“Knowledge at Smith to me means a collaborative, supportive environment where I know I can learn without fear of failing, and know that my professors and peers are cultivating success.”

Xochitl Quiroz

First Years’ Engagement & Humanities Librarian

“Rather than gatekeep information or ideas, I find that the Smith community is quick to share out what they have learned with their community members. My favorite moments are when I am working with a class, and I am able to learn from both the students and faculty, despite being the instructor in that room.”

Carrie Baker

Professor of the Study of Women and Gender; Chair of the Program for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality

“At Smith, we teach critical thinking as a key avenue to knowledge: relentless curiosity, questioning assumptions, and digging deeper. We don’t take anyone’s word for granted, but always do our homework to ensure we are getting it right.”

Cowiya Arouna ’21

Global Markets Strategic Investments Associate, Bank of America Merrill Lynch

“Smith created a space where I could be interested in economics and French and how the world works. I got to try hard things, be excited about things I never knew were possible. Smith gave me the confidence to say, I want to be part of the world of private equity and investment decision-making, and be able to navigate it, and go for it!”
