There is an option to complete a specialization within the SLP program. These allow students to gain some depth of knowledge and clinical experience in an area of interest. The specializations are in the areas of Deafness, Autism, Medical, Early Intervention (RISE) and a bilingual extension to the Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD) certification. Each of these requires taking 2 courses beyond the program requirements. Are you interested in a specialization? *

There are some choices within the SLP program. Answering the following questions will allow us to plan your program.

Please note: some practicum placements and/or specializations may require certain coursework. This will be discussed on an individual basis during advisement.

Each student is required to take either CSD 535 Foundations of Aphasia, Right Hemisphere Brain Damage, and Dementia or CSD 579 Assessment and Treatment of Cognitive Communication Disorders. (The other course can be taken as an elective and is required for students in the medical specialization.) Which would you like to take?

CSD 542 Developmental Disabilities: Explores the characteristics of individuals with a variety of developmental disabilities of both genetic and environmental origin. Important topics related to achievement of self-determination and success in adolescence and adulthood for this population are discussed, and these theories are applied to development of individualized assessment and intervention plans.

Early intervention (consists of three 1-credit online and/or hybrid options)

CSD 590 Motor Speech Disorders: Foundations and applied knowledge of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology specifically related to the salient features, assessment, and treatment of individuals with motor speech disorders including the dysarthrias and apraxia across the life span. Those living with neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, ALS, Cerebral Palsy (among others) as well as childhood apraxia of speech are discussed. Applied knowledge of assessment and treatment is immediately translated into directly working with clients and is incorporated as an experiential learning component of this course. May be offered as a hybrid course.

AUT 661 Autism Supports: This course will focus on evidence-based strategies and supports for individuals with autism. Emphasis will be placed on evaluating and implementing supports for younger children with autism as well older children and adults using an interdisciplinary and person-centered perspective.

CSD 597 Facilitating Language and Communication with Technology: Students will learn to make and implement effective clinical decisions that result in optimal care of children with cochlear implants and power hearing aids. Students will study deafness in children and the technologies, programs, and services that enhance spoken communication and learning. Students will develop an understanding of the impact of medical, socio-economic, and cultural factors on clinical interventions with children and deafness.
