Essays
Please answer the following essay questions (maximum of 300 words for each essay).
What motivates you to pursue your intended major(s)?
One of the most famous questions parents often get asked is: “I’m starving dad what can we get to eat?” The answer to this frequently asked question is usually: “well son, what do you want?” For many people, the conversation usually ends with a visit to a drive through restaurant, an order of pizza, or a quick batch of macaroni and cheese. Some kids even have the liberty to get specific about what to eat, saying “I don’t like pizza! I want something else!” The child might get to go wherever he or she wants, eat whatever, and not think twice about it however, the reality is that millions of children and adults do not have the luxury of choosing what is for dinner, or even having a meal. For some, the answer for “what’s for dinner, dad?” is “I’m sorry son, you’ll have to wait until the next paycheck comes in.” The heartbreaking reality is that many families cannot afford food, and hunger is becoming apparent to millions of families. Although I have never experienced true hunger, I have always been aware of it. I remember always trying to help rose in need in whatever way I could like donating food or money. The only thing that has changed is the fact that I want to and can do more. To me, science is the answer to hunger, specifically, plant genetics. My interest is to study genetic engendering in hopes to make crops grow more efficiently and become more productive in order to product more food for families that need it. I believe that I can work to make crops grow more food for people worldwide through the power of genetic modification so that the answer to that infamous question can be “whatever you want, son” for all.
How will studying your chosen field enable you to achieve your professional goals?
Genetic modification is the wave of the future. It seems like every week I hear something on the news about breakthroughs in the area of genetics or of its related fields. I want to get involved in this area scientific excitement and progress, using it to solve hunger. My goal is to use my chosen field of genetics and chemistry to study genetic engineering of plants. Recently I have been interested in studying altering the DNA of plants. If I can find ways for plants to grow more efficiently, become herbicide resistant, and to produce more, it will make farming not only easier, but more productive. The easier a farmer can grow plants, the more food they can produce and the more people can be fed. By studying genetics, my dream is to make the fight against local and world hunger one step closer to being over. Imagine what a world would look like if no single person had to experience hunger. The benefits would be numerous and would expand far beyond just feeding people. For example, making food more readily available to families would reduce stress level in the home, resulting in a more peaceful environment by reducing domestic violence (many studies show that poverty and inability to feed their children results in parents taking their stress out on their children). The fight against hunger is one that is closer than ever before to being won. With the help of my passion and resources, I hope to find the cure to the epidemic we have all seen in the form of hunger.
